Illibro, a questo punto, si congeda; e vorrei sapere quanto Federico ne sia uscito più chiaro e accessibile, oppure avesse per destino quello di far durare una specie di inviolabile complessità. Di una cosa, tuttavia, sono certo: che queste pagine hanno risvegliato un ritratto che aveva bisogno sì, di restyling, come ho già detto nella prefazione, ma anche di un animo e di uno scopo nuovi. Dopo l’ondata di voyeurismi, finti scoop e insinuazioni, queste pagine ci hanno ridato la sua persona prima del personaggio, la sua innocenza prima della maestria, la sua dolcezza prima ancora del fascino. E la percezione netta della genialità più visionaria che la storia del cinema ci abbia offerto.
Il libro risveglia la vera passione di Federico: vivere la vita, rispettandone il mistero, non chiedendole nulla che non sia il lasciarti guidare da una mano che sa tutto di te e ti spinge verso l’unica sorte che puoi avere. Chissà se Federico ha mai creduto davvero che “nessuno va mai tanto lontano come chi non sa dove sta andando”, un detto di Cromwell che gli era piaciuto, ma una cosa mi sembra certa: egli fece della sua esistenza tutt’altro che un gioco, come si è creduto di lusingarlo confezionando questa, d’altronde, felliniana interpretazione: chi ha avuto con lui un po’ di familiarità sa bene di quanto puntiglio, di quante inquietudini e rabbie egli riempì la sua vita. The book has now come to an end. I should like to be able to know how much clearer and more accessible Federico now is for readers, or admit that he is still doomed to inexpressible complexity. However, I am certain about one thing: this book has given new life to a portrait that was in need of restyling, as I mentioned in the preface, but also of a new spirit and purpose. After so much voyeurism, so many false scoops and insinuations, we now have the true person rather than a mere celebrity, innocence before art, gentleness before fascination. We have a clear picture of the most visionary genius in film history.
The book reveals Federico’s strongest desire: to live life, with respect for its mysteries, without expecting anything, except to be guided by a hand that knows everything about you and directs you towards your only possible fate. Who knows whether he really ever believed that “No man rises so high as he knows not whither he goes”, words of Oliver Cromwell he particularly appreciated. One thing does seem clear to me, however: he did not turn his existence into a game, following this “Fellinian” interpretation cooked up by some, thinking they would please him. Anyone who knew him well enough was aware of the obstinacy, disquiet and sense of outrage he put into his life. He was perhaps more of a shaman than selfstrategist. Actually, he was something of a novice in the face of strong will and energy, or reluctance and prudence, deriving from the signs with which he surrounded himself, just like a circle, inside which providential kindness could be guaranteed ....to be continued buying the PDF
